Article Historiography and Social Memory: A History Construction in the Example of “Târîh-i Sefer-i Beç” Dated 1731(Istanbul Universitesi, 2024) Aydar, M.Ottoman historiography boasts an extensive body of work, particularly on political and military developments. Among these, the 1683 Vienna Campaign holds a pivotal place as a turning point in Ottoman history, marking the end of the empire’s expansion dreams in Europe. This siege is equally significant in European history, influencing military and political landscapes. While contemporary sources detail the campaign’s process and outcomes, later historical texts offer unique interpretations of the event. One such text is the manuscript Târîh-i Sefer-i Beç (History of the Vienna Campaign), preserved in the National Library of France, Supplément Turc 870. This manuscript provides a comprehensive account of the campaign, presenting rare and original insights. This study examines Târîh-i Sefer-i Beç in comparison with other contemporary sources, evaluating its descriptions, language, and unique details, as well as its significance within the historiographical tradition. Written nearly half a century after the campaign, the manuscript offers a fresh perspective, reassessing the event’s place in Ottoman historiography. Its straightforward language and detailed content distinguish it as an important, albeit underappreciated, source. However, its singular copy and limited audience restricted its influence on social memory. Despite this, the work remains invaluable for understanding the broader implications of the Vienna Campaign and its historiographical impact, especially when compared to accounts by contemporaneous witnesses. © 2024 Istanbul Universitesi. In this study, the attitudes of the Ottoman ruling elites and the process leading to the declaration of war are discussed in the light of new and existing sources. In this context, the developments behind the scenes of the process leading to the war are examined in detail by focusing on a narrative source entitled “Derbeyân-ı sefer-i Nemçe (On the Explanation of the Austrian Campaign)” in a compendium preserved in the National Library of France. In this way, previously unknown aspects of the political atmosphere of the period, conflicting ideas among Ottoman decision-makers, and the process leading to the decision of war are revealed. © 2024 Burhan CAGLAR. Its history dates back to when people first started communicating with each other. In this direction, propaganda has become a frequently used method that serves to personal interests. Throughout history, people have benefited from propaganda activities in various ways. Propaganda activities, especially used effectively in times of war, have served an important role in persuading, encouraging and supporting to the war in this process. In this context, the propaganda activities carried out from the beginning of a war to its end reveal that this concept and war are inextricably linked. This study focuses on the propaganda activities in the 1683 Vienna Siege, which emerged in the last quarter of the XVIIth century and was one of the most important political events in Turkish and European history. This war, which shaped the future of both the Ottoman Empire and the Habsburg Empire, as well as other Western states, has been discussed many times in terms of political, social and economic terms. However, the propaganda activities carried out from the beginning to the end of the war have not been discussed much. From this point of view, the study reveals the propaganda methods used by both sides in the process from the decision-making to war until its conclusion. In the study, it is seen that the Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa Pasha of Merzifon engaged in propaganda activities such as convincing the state officials to war, keeping the morale of the army high and breaking the spirituality of the enemy with various propaganda activities. In response to his propaganda activities, the Habsburg government applied to various propaganda activities in order to involve the Christian states in the war on its side and to increase the level of public interest and participation in the defense of the city. © 2020 Turkish Historical Society.
