Menopause is associated with a range of physical and psychological changes in women. While these changes were historically explained mainly through internal factors such as hormonal processes, contemporary sociobiological models suggest that negative attributions are largely shaped by cultural factors. One of the most prominent of these negative attributions concerns body image. Because the physical changes accompanying menopause often diverge from socially defined standards of “classical beauty,” such as thinness, a narrow waist, upright posture, and firm skin, women’s body image may become more negative during this period.
The social and clinical psychology literature has primarily focused on the effects of body-related images presented in traditional media, such as television and newspapers, on the body image of menopausal women. However, social media platforms are now used far more frequently than traditional media. In this context, it is important to examine how exposure to “classical beauty” images on social media, which represents a less regulated media environment, and patterns of social media use relate to body image among menopausal women.
This project aims to address this question. Approximately 450 volunteer women who report being in the menopausal period will be recruited online through the Qualtrics interface. First, participants’ frequency of exposure to “classical beauty” images on social media will be measured. Participants will then complete the Social Media Addiction Scale, Adult Form, and the Body Image Scale. The study will be concluded after providing feedback to participants.
In the first month of the project, all measurement instruments will be implemented in the Qualtrics interface. Screening and branching logic will be programmed to prevent individuals who do not meet the target criteria from continuing in the study, ensuring that only eligible participants are included. During the following four months, recruitment will continue until the target sample size of 450 participants is reached. In the final month, the collected data will be cleaned and analyzed using Jamovi to test the hypotheses.
