Book Part Transcultural Identity Formation in the Memoirs of Halide Edib and Huda Shaarawi(Taylor and Francis, 2025) Akbey, E.Z.Although Turkish Halide Edib (1882-1964) and Egyptian Huda Shaarawi (1879-1947) never met in person, they shared similar worldviews and were impelled to writing their respective autobiographies by similar forces. For the greater part of their prolific lives, these two rebellious writers worked for the national struggle and women’s emancipation. Both Shaarawi and Edib succeed in engrossing readers in an alternative history that has not been given a place in the official historiography through their memoirs, a confluence point of politics, history and memory. Comparing Halide Edib’s Memoirs (1926) and Huda Shaarawi’s Harem Years (1987) will not only advance knowledge of how these women negotiated the conflicting ideologies of Eastern nationalism and Western feminism to create their unique female identities but will also deepen understanding of how embracing arguably paradoxical concepts like feminism, nationalism and religion may foster the development of a transcultural identity. © 2026 selection and editorial matter, Carmen Zamorano Llena, Billy Gray, Carolina León Vegas and Carles Magrinyà Badiella; individual chapters, the contributors.
