In the Crusader-Muslim relations spanning nearly two centuries (1096-1291), some geographical regions stand out with their political, religious, economic, and geostrategic importance. Places such as Nicaea, Antioch, Jerusalem, Damascus, Aleppo, Mosul, and Egypt can be cited as examples of this judgment. This importance also applies to castles under the rule of the Crusaders or Muslims as part of an administrative center or that changed hands occasionally as the scene of conflicts between the parties. Sometimes, a castle could even serve as a security lock for a large area. This importance makes them a base of operations for attack or a fortified structure to take refuge under challenging situations. In this context, the fortified castle of Harenc, which is located about 40 kilometers from Antioch and 88 kilometers from Aleppo, and dominates the road from Antakya to Aleppo, has always been a place that the parties wanted to control in terms of controlling the road. From this point of view, the primary purpose of this study is to analyze the struggle to dominate the region from geostrategic, political, military, and economic perspectives and to explain it from different perspectives within the framework of a theory. While the geographical scope of the study covers Harenc and its environs, the temporal scope of the study covers the period from the Crusaders’ conquest of the region in 1098 until 1164, when Nûreddîn Mahmûd definitively annexed the region to Islamic rule. The original value of this study is that it analyzes the political, religious, economic, and geostrategic aspects of Harenc and its vicinity, which are examined as part of a whole in the studies on Crusader-Muslim relations. In this way, the effects of a narrowed area on the general structure will be shown by analyzing the events that took place in and around a castle rather than a chronological history or the narration of events in a general geography. This will also contribute to the study of geostrategic position, war and strategy by examining the strategies developed at the point of dominating the region. The study will be based on the Islamic sources of the period and the Crusader chronicles, and the evaluations of modern researchers will be consulted. It is envisaged that the study will be published in a journal indexed by TR Dizin.
