The study examined whether ingroup norms and group formation have a moderating role in the relationship between ingroup identification and ingroup bias. When the findings of the project, which consisted of three separate studies, are considered as a whole, results showed that in certain tasks involving real groups, higher levels of ingroup identification were associated with greater ingroup bias. However, no moderating effect of ingroup norms or group formation was detected in this relationship. Similarly, in laboratory groups created using the minimal group paradigm, no moderating role of ingroup norms or group formation was observed. The frequent reliance on student samples in social psychology research has been identified as one of the contributors to the replicability crisis in the field (Open Science Collaboration, 2015). Although this practice has been criticized (Suedfeld, 2016), researchers continue to rely on student samples due to their accessibility. However, even small incentives can substantially increase participation rates in research (Göritz, 2010). With the support of TÜBİTAK funding, this project was able to provide symbolic incentives to participants and, compared to similar studies in the literature (for example, Jetten, Spears, and Manstead, 1997), reached a more demographically heterogeneous sample within a relatively short period of time. This allowed the research to be conducted with a sample that differs from the more typical samples used in prior studies. Finally, one of the main aims of this project was to inform the identification manipulation planned for the principal investigator’s doctoral dissertation. Although the findings did not confirm most of the hypotheses, they pointed to additional components that should be considered when designing ingroup identification manipulations. In this respect, the project served a guiding role for the doctoral research.
