With the increasing accessibility of mass communication technologies, interest in online games has grown substantially, especially among young people. In these games, individuals can communicate and exchange information with others. However, because these intergroup interaction environments are largely uncontrolled, communication processes can vary in both positive and negative directions. In competitive games in particular, losing may lead individuals to direct negative emotions and thoughts toward their opponents. Given the nature of online games, adopting anonymity through nicknames may be associated with expressing such emotions and behaviors toward others without adequately evaluating their potential harmful impact. At the same time, this relationship may vary depending on both the player’s own social identity and the social identity of the target. For example, the position of one’s group within the social hierarchy can influence attitudes and behaviors directed toward outgroups. Building on this framework, the present study aims to examine, among members of an advantaged group (Turks), whether identity condition (anonymity versus real identity) leads to differences in tolerance toward cheating behaviors in online games when the target is an ingroup versus an outgroup member. To this end, we plan to recruit 120 participants who self-identify as Turkish and invite them to the department laboratory. Demographic information will first be collected from all participants. Next, participants’ level of ingroup identification will be measured. Participants will then be randomly assigned to one of two online game conditions: anonymous identity or real-identity use. In the JavaScript-based game developed for this study, participants will play in random order against an ingroup member and an outgroup member. In both cases, the opponent will be presented as a character who consistently cheats in a prisoner’s dilemma game. After each round, participants’ level of tolerance toward the opponent’s behavior will be measured. At the end of the session, participants will provide feedback and will be fully debriefed about the true purpose of the study. The study will conclude with the provision of an incentive in the form of a meal voucher worth 40 TL.
