Article 16. Article Citation - WoS: 1Adaptation Levels and Expectations of Students with Disabilities in Physical Education and Sports Departments of Universities(Ankara University, Fac Educational Sciences, 2019) Namli, Sevinc; Suveren, SibelThis research aims to determine the adaptations and expectations of the students with disabilities, who study in the physical education and sports departments, to their deparments. Çalışma, Batı düşünce dünyasındaki \"dayanışma\" kavramının tarihsel arka planına kısaca değinerek XX. yüzyıldaki (post-) modern düşünce hayatına mensup düşünürlerden olan Adorno, Habermas ve Rorty tarafından ne şekilde ele alındığını ortaya koymayı amaçlamaktadırArticle Citation - WoS: 4Citation - Scopus: 7Aluminium Phosphide-Induced Genetic and Oxidative Damages in Vitro: Attenuation by Laurus Nobilis L. Leaf Extract(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2013) Turkez, Hasan; Togar, BasakObjective: The present investigation was undertaken to assess the protective effect of Laurus nobilis leaf extract (LNE) against aluminum phosphide (AIP)-induced genotoxic and oxidative damages stress in cultured human blood cells in the presence of a metabolic activator (S9 mix). Materials and Methods: Sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosome aberration (CA) assays were used to assess AlP-induced genotoxicity and to establish the protective effects of LNE. In addition, we determined total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and total oxidative status (TOS) levels in AlP and LNE treated cultures for biomonitoring the oxidative alterations. Results: There was significant increases (P < 0.05) in both SCE and CA frequencies of cultures treated with AlP as compared to controls. Our results also showed that AlP (58 mg/l) caused oxidative stress by altering TAC and TOS levels. However, co-application of LNE (25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/l) and AlP resulted in decreases of SCE, CA rates and TOS level and increases of TAC level as compared to the group treated with AlP alone. Conclusion: The preventive role of LNE in alleviating AlP-induced DNA and oxidative damages was indicated for the first time in the present study.Article Citation - WoS: 22Citation - Scopus: 22Ameliorative Effect of Supplementation with L-Glutamine on Oxidative Stress, DNA Damage, Cell Viability and Hepatotoxicity Induced by 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzo in Rat Hepatocyte Cultures(Springer, 2012) Turkez, Hasan; Geyikoglu, Fatime; Yousef, Mokhtar I.; Celik, Kubra; Bakir, Tulay O.The most potent of the dioxins, 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD), is a persistent and ubiquitous environmental contaminant. And the health impact of exposure to TCDD is of great concern to the general public. Recent data indicate that l-glutamine (Gln) has antioxidant properties and may influence hepatotoxicity. The objective of the present study was undertaken to explore the effectiveness of Gln in alleviating the hepatotoxicity of TCDD on primary cultured rat hepatocytes. Gln (0.5, 1 and 2 mM) was added to cultures alone or simultaneously with TCDD (0.005 and 0.01 mM). The hepatocytes were treated with TCDD and Gln for 48 h. Then cell viability was detected by [3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] (MTT) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release, while total antioxidant capacity (TAC), total glutathione (TGSH) and total oxidative stress (TOS) levels were determined to evaluate the oxidative injury. The DNA damage was also analyzed by liver micronucleus assay (MN) and 8-oxo-2-deoxyguanosine (8-OH-dG). The results of MTT and LDH assays showed that TCDD decreased cell viability but not l-glutamine. TCDD also increased TOS level in rat hepatocytes and significantly decreased TAC and TGSH levels. On the basis of increasing doses, the dioxin in a dose-dependent manner caused significant increases of micronucleated hepatocytes (MNHEPs) and 8-OH-dG as compared to control culture. Whereas, in cultures exposured with Gln alone, TOS levels were not changed and TAC and TGSH together were significantly increased in dose-dependent fashion. The presence of Gln with TCDD modulated the hepatotoxic effects of TCDD on primary hepatocytes cultures. Noteworthy, Gln has a protective effect against TCDD-mediated DNA damages. As conclusion, we reported here an increased potential therapeutic significance of l-glutamine in TCDD-mediated hepatic injury for the first time.Article Citation - WoS: 1Citation - Scopus: 1Analysing Headway Spacing and Calculating Passenger Car Equivalent Values Using Computer Vision and International Dataset(Sveučiliste U Zagrebu, Fakultet Prometnih Znanosti, 2025) Celik, Burak; Tortum, Ahmet; Cintas, Emre; Ozyer, BarisAccurate traffic flow data are crucial for effective transportation planning and management. Different vehicle types impact traffic flow variably, requiring distinct passenger car equivalency (PCE) factors for calculating intersection and road capacity. Headway and spacing data are essential to assess traffic density and service level. Conventional data collection methods are time-consuming and often inaccurate. Unlike existing studies, this study employed computer vision to measure mixed traffic stream volume in terms of passenger car equivalent and collect headway-spacing data with high accuracy. The vehicle detection and counting procedures provide the mandatory infrastructure for measuring mixed traffic stream volume and collecting headway and spacing data. Novel approaches were introduced to gather comprehensive traffic data, including passenger car equivalent values, headway, spacing, flow rate, vehicle speed and traffic volume, using a single system. A custom and comprehensive international dataset was collected to analyse these approaches. Our trained model achieved a mean average precision (mAP) of 97.4%, with accuracies of 95% for headway, 93% for spacing and 99% for PCE values. To establish this relationship between Olympic performance and economic factors, an examination was conducted on the medals obtained by countries during Winter Olympic Games spanning the game period from 1960 to 2018. The results of the Pedroni cointegration test signify the presence of a robust co-integration relationship across all test statistics conducted The Panel ARDL analysis reveals that Real GDP emerges as the singular influential factor affecting countries' medal scores in the long term, achieving statistical significance at the 1% level. Additionally, labor compensation exerts a discernible impact, albeit at a 10% significance level. Notably, in the short term, none of these variables exhibit any influence on medal scores, a finding corroborated by the results from the panel PMG analysis. Furthermore, among all variables examined, only Real GDP demonstrates Granger causality concerning medal scores. In contrast, none of the other variables exhibit a Granger causative relationship with medal scores. This profound insight underscores the specific and substantial role played by Real GDP in shaping the dynamics of medal scores, highlighting its unique influence on medal success.Article Citation - WoS: 19Citation - Scopus: 15Analysis of Factors Affecting Individuals' Sources of Happiness with Multinomial Logistic Model(Assoc Measurement & Evaluation Education & Psychology, 2021) Cebi Karaaslan, KubranurThe happiness levels of individuals and their sources of happiness have been wondered a lot and researched from past to present. In this paper, the light scattering from uniaxial and biaxial small particles is investigated using the anisotropy formulation based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, although this method has been used to analyse the isotropic particles. The obtained light scattering solutions from the isotropic small particle using the FDTD method are compared with the exact solutions obtained by Mie theory. The effects of the anisotropy and the rotation of optical axes on the light scattering are also investigated. Numerical results show that the distribution of scattered light is strongly affected by the anisotropy of the particles. Therefore, the anisotropy of the scattering particles is an important factor in several applications such as free-space optical communications.Article Citation - WoS: 3Analyzing Factors Affecting Tax Morale Levels in Turkey Using Alternative Ordered Response Models(Babes-Bolyai University, 2019) Ozdemir, Dilek; Celik, Ali Kemal; Bedir Kara, SerapThe concept of tax morale is introduced to measure the reason of paying taxes by subjects. The main objective of this paper is twofold. Firstly, the present paper examines potential factors that may influence the degree of tax morale in Turkey. Secondly, the paper aims to determine the best model to explain the determinants of the degree of tax morale by a comparison of alternative ordered response models. For these purposes, a written-questionnaire was administered to 943 subjects in three cities of northern Turkey, namely, Erzurum, Erzincan, and Bayburt. Standard ordered probit (OPROBIT) and alternative ordered response models including generalized ordered logit model (GOLOGIT), partial proportional odds (PPO) model and heteroskedastic ordered logit (HOLOGIT) model were performed to determine the best model fit. Results reveal that marital status, monthly income, and operation time were positively correlated with higher degrees of tax morale. The empirical findings also indicated that higher educated subjects were more likely to have lower degrees of tax morale. Tax amnesty, higher tax load, tax system, tax policies, previous negative experiences, and efficient use of public expenditures were found to have statistically significant impact on the degree of tax morale among subjects.Article Citation - WoS: 44Citation - Scopus: 45The Anti-Cancer Efficacies of Diffractaic, Lobaric, and Usnic Acid: in Vitro Inhibition of Glioma(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2018) Emsen, Bugrahan; Aslan, Ali; Turkez, Hasan; Joughi, Ali Taghizadehghaleh; Kaya, AbdullahAims: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) shows the most aggressive invasion among primary brain tumors. In spite of the standard therapy methods such as surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, the mortalities are high in GBM patients owing to side effects. Some lichen secondary metabolites that have many bioactive functions exhibited anti-cancer efficacy toward many cancer types. The present study was undertaken to investigate proliferation change, oxidative status and DNA damage potentials of human U87MG-GBM, and primary rat cerebral cortex (PRCC) cells exposed to three lichen secondary metabolites. Materials and Methods: Different concentrations of lichen secondary metabolites including diffractaic acid (DA), lobaric acid (LA), and (+)-usnic acid (UA) were used for the treatments. PRCC cells were obtained from Sprague Dawley (R) rats. U87MG cell line was preferred as GBM cells. Results: The results showed that lactate dehydrogenase and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine levels increased in PRCC and U87MG cells in a clear dose-dependent manner. Inhibitory concentration 50% (IC50) values of LA, DA, and UA were calculated as 9.08, 122.26, 132.69 mg/L for PRCC cells and 5.77, 35.67, 41.55 mg/L for U87MG cells, respectively. Concentration of 10 mg/L of DA and UA demonstrated high anti-oxidant capacity on healthy PRCC cells. Conclusions: Overall, obtained data indicated that LA was highly toxic on GBM and PRCC cells. However, DA and then UA had high anti-oxidant capacity on PRCC cells. These results suggest that further studies that will be held on LA may play a critical role in GBM treatment.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 16Antioxidant and Anticancer Activities of Extract of Inula Helenium (L.) in Human U-87 Mg Glioblastoma Cell Line(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2018) Koc, Kubra; Ozdemir, Ozlem; Ozdemir, Aysenur; Dogru, Unsal; Turkez, HasanAims: The aim of this study is to explore the antioxidant and antiproliferative activities of aqueous extract from aerial parts of Inula helenium (L.) against human U-87 MG glioma cell line. Conclusion: The results strengthen the evidence that I. helenium could be considered a natural resource of potential antitumor agents for brain cancer. In addition, this study is expected to expand the existing information on the anticancer activity of I. helenium and to assist in a more focused design of further research as chemotherapeutic agents.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 8Application of Gov (Flow Peening) Process to Improve Surface Quality of Ti-6al of Aerospace Material(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2023) Kalak, Murat; Sahin, Burak; Gov, Ibrahim; Dogan, Abdurrahman; Gov, KursadTi-6Al-4V is a difficult-to-cut material with wide applications due to its superior mechanical features. Non-traditional surface treatment methods namely abrasive flow machining and shot peening are applied to obtain desired surface quality. GOV (flow peening) process having advantages of surface quality and strength improvement (compressive residual stress generation) of AFM and shot peening respectively was developed. In this paper, the effects of the GOV process parameters (number of cycles, steel ball size, and media ratio) on the material surfaces were investigated to evaluate surface roughness (R-a), material removal amount and white layer thickness. The surface roughness, R-a value was decreased from 2.17 mu m to 0.80 mu m. In addition, 4.4 mg of material corresponds to total amount of white layer was removed (verified by SEM images). GOV process can be used to improve surface quality by decreasing surface roughness and removing white layer without any excess chip removal.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 3Application of the Conformable Reduced Differential Transform Method to Fractional Order K(M, N) Non-Linear Differential Equations(Vinca Institute Nuclear Sci, 2022) Okur, Serkan; Yigider, MuhammedIn this paper, it is discussed over the method of reduced differential transform method with the help of conformable derivative of the time fractional differential equation. Regarding the issue, this study examines the impact of AI on employment rates across 17 leading AI countries from 1998 to 2017 using two panel econometric techniques, DOLS and FMOLS, to ensure robust results. For the first time, as far as is known, the effect of AI on employment in distinct sectors is analyzed separately. By uniquely combining different countries and sectors within a macroeconomic framework, this study provides a more comprehensive understanding through a total of eight estimates. The findings indicate that, according to both DOLS and FMOLS techniques, increased AI innovation may raise employment rates in the overall economy and in the service sector, while reducing employment rates in the industrial and agricultural sectors. Consequently, while AI positively impacts overall employment, considering industrial and agricultural sectors, employment policies should be adjusted to meet evolving needs in the AI era.Article Citation - WoS: 68Citation - Scopus: 84An Artificial Neural Network Model for Highway Accident Prediction: A Case Study of Erzurum, Turkey(Svenciliste U Zagrebu, Fakultet Prometnih Znanosti, 2015) Codur, Muhammed Yasin; Tortum, AhmetThis study presents an accident prediction model of Erzurum's Highways in Turkey using artificial neural network (ANN) approaches. There are many ANN models for predicting the number of accidents on highways that were developed using 8 years with 7,780 complete accident reports of historical data (2005-2012). The best ANN model was chosen for this task and the model parameters included years, highway sections, section length (km), annual average daily traffic (AADT), the degree of horizontal curvature, the degree of vertical curvature, traffic accidents with heavy vehicles (percentage), and traffic accidents that occurred in summer (percentage). In the ANN model development, the sigmoid activation function was employed with Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. The performance of the developed ANN model was evaluated by mean square error (MSE), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the coefficient of determination (R-2). The model results indicate that the degree of vertical curvature is the most important parameter that affects the number of accidents on highways.Article Citation - WoS: 2Citation - Scopus: 2Assessment of Sociodemographic Indicators of Tobacco Expenditure: An Application of the Censored Regression Model(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2023) Cebi Karaaslan, KubranurBackground The high level of tobacco use in Turkey and across the world, causes a high number of health problems. The levels of protein, fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, folate, vitamin B12, iron, magnesium, zinc, and potassium intake increased with adherence to Mediterranean diet (p < 0.001). Age, parental education level, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, and skipping meals affected MSDPS.Conclusion: adolescents' adherence to the Mediterranean diet was low and correlated with some anthropometric measures. Increasing adherence to the Mediterranean diet may contribute to preventing obesity and adequate and balanced nutrition in adolescents.Article Citation - WoS: 7Citation - Scopus: 5Association Between Human Hair Loss and the Expression Levels of Nucleolin, Nucleophosmin, and Ubtf Genes(Mary Ann Liebert, Inc, 2016) Tasdemir, Sener; Eroz, Recep; Dogan, Hasan; Erdem, Haktan Bagis; Sahin, Ibrahim; Kara, Murat; Turkez, HasanAims: Nucleolar organizer regions, also known as argyrophilic nucleolar organizer regions, are associated with ribosomal genes. The main function of the nucleolus is the rapid production of ribosomal subunits, a process that must be highly regulated to provide the appropriate levels for cellular proliferation and cell growth. There are no studies in the literature addressing the expression and function of nucleolar component proteins, including nucleophosmin, nucleolin and the upstream binding transcription factor (UBTF), in human follicular hair cells. Methods: Nineteen healthy males who had normal and sufficient hair follicles on the back of the head, but exhibited hair loss on the frontal/vertex portions of the head and 14 healthy males without hair loss were included in the current study. Gene expression levels were measured by relative quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction. Results: In the individuals suffering from alopecia, the total expression levels of nucleolin, nucleophosmin, and UBTF were lower in normal sites than in hair loss sites. Strong expression level correlations were detected between: nucleophosmin and nucleolin; nucleophosmin and UBTF, and nucleolin and UBTF for both groups. Conclusions: There was an association between human hair loss and the expression levels of nucleolin, nucleophosmin, and UBTF genes.Article Citation - WoS: 11Citation - Scopus: 12Astrocyte/Neuron Ratio and Its Importance on Glutamate Toxicity: An in Vitro Voltammetric Study(Springer, 2016) Hacimuftuoglu, Ahmet; Tatar, Abdulgani; Cetin, Damla; Taspinar, Numan; Saruhan, Fatih; Okkay, Ufuk; Suleyman, HalisThe purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between neuron cells and astrocyte cells in regulating glutamate toxicity on the 10th and 20th day in vitro. A mixed primary culture system from newborn rats that contain cerebral cortex neurons cells was employed to investigate the glutamate toxicity. All cultures were incubated with various glutamate concentrations, then viability tests and histological analyses were performed. The activities of glutamate transporters were determined by using in vitro voltammetry technique. Viable cell number was decreased significantly on the 10th day at 10(-7) M and at 10(-6) M glutamate applications, however, viable cell number was not decreased at 20th day. Astrocyte number was increased nearly six times on the 20th day as compared to the 10th day. The peak point of glutamate reuptake capacity was about 2 x 10(-4) M on the 10th day and 10(-3) M on the 20th day. According to our results, we suggested that astrocyte age was important to maintain neuronal survival against glutamate toxicity. Thus, we revealed activation or a trigger point of glutamate transporters on astrocytes due to time since more glutamate was taken up by astrocytes when glutamate transporters on the astrocyte were triggered with high exogenous glutamate concentrations. In conclusion, the present investigation is the first voltammetric study on the reuptake parameters of glutamate in vitro.
