The subject of this research project consists of bâhnâmes produced in early modern Ottoman literature; these can be defined as ancient medical books that primarily address sexual life and the treatment of sexual desire/dysfunction, containing protective, supportive, and therapeutic practices in this regard. The scope of the project is limited to early modern Ottoman literature, specifically focusing on bâhnâme texts written as original compositions, translations, or compilation-translations in and around Anatolia between the 15th and 18th centuries. While preliminary studies identified more than 30 bâhnâme texts from this 300-year period, a more detailed examination revealed that many are copies of one another. Consequently, this research project has established a corpus based on 13 original, though not voluminous, manuscripts—5 of which are published and 8 of which remain unpublished. The aim of this research project is to identify aspects of Ottoman medical history, particularly concerning sexual and reproductive health, through these bâhnâme texts and to develop an interdisciplinary interpretation across the axes of medicine, folklore, literature, and culture. Previous studies have often characterized bâhnâmes as pornographic texts filled with sexual imagery; however, considering the historical process, it is evident that many of these studies focused on late modern Ottoman literature. The original value of this research project lies in uncovering the knowledge reflected in bâhnâme texts—which have not yet been the subject of a thematic study due to their perceived pornographic nature—and establishing that they still maintained the identity of medical texts during the early modern Ottoman period. Regarding project management, the definition, historical progression, and thematic analysis of the bâhnâme texts will be conducted across six work packages. Information regarding medicine, folklore, literature, and sociology reflected in the texts will be identified and analyzed within the framework of sexual and reproductive health. Each work package will employ a different methodology. The project team is composed of an expert in medical history, an expert in pharmaceutical botany, researchers in folklore, language, and literature, a sociologist, and a social (cultural) anthropologist. The project's outputs and academic dissemination include an edited book, book chapters, articles, a workshop, and a thesis. Furthermore, within the scope of its broader impact, the project will contribute to fields such as culture and arts, education, public policy, employment, and health in terms of social and cultural impact within the framework of the 12th Development Plan, while also offering a significant academic contribution.
